If you already have fundamental background of computational fluid dynamics, you need to know which CFD code is good to be used for your project. There are couple of commercial CFD codes: FLUENT, PHOENICS... You can study their features and make a decision. Hope it helps.

in the field of Aeronautical Engineering it is very important that you must have mastery in either of the subjects of CFD or FEM. if you are not interested in Structural Analysis of Aeroplanes then it is good to go for CFD or you can learn FEM as well. as far as job is concerned, you can get good jobs but not sure if you can get money as good as in IT industries. so chose your options wisely. i am also aeronautical engineer and if you want you can take my direct help. +91 80 4119 7222 ext. 7507

hi, its Zahhid from bangladesh. i am really interested in computatinal mechanics. but there are many branches under it. but i have narrowed it to two--cfd or Computational solid mechanics. in computationla solid mechanics FEM is mainly used(i have very little idea about CM). In CFD finte volume method is mainly used but i have seen in wiki that cfd is going toward FEM. but now can i say that CFD and FEM are two different Field? i presume that FEM and computational solid mechanis are same. wht do you think i should as my research field in my master's study? CFD or FEM.? i think it would have been great if i could find a faculty member who is using fem in CFD.

Dear brother, Assalaam alaikumw wa rahamatullah. i think you are right about the CFD and CSM, what you call Computational Solid Mechanics. In the case of Solid Mechanics mostly we are interested in the stress available (tensile and compressive) in the solids and we do the computation using our tools. On the other hands we do the Pressure, Temperature and Density calculation in a fluid flow while doing the computation using tools. I think pressure too can be termed as stress for fluids.

I don't agree with you on the statement of FEM and CSM where you have said these two may be similar. Actually for doing computation of CFD or CSM we use two methods viz. FEM or FVM. 01. Finite Element Method or 02. Finite Volume Method Both are actually used for CFD as well as CSM. There is not difference in these and these are mare two different approaches which a scholar does have while solving problems related to CFD or CSM.

Normally there are two packages available in the market for these two which are very famous. 01. Fluent (for CFD) and 02. Ansys (for CSM) Apart from these there are some more packages available for CFD like "CFD2000" or "CFX" but I dont know if there is any software package available for CSM, other than Ansys.

I have just now started my research in CFD area. I am doing my doctorate and till now totally inexperienced in CFD. But I am learning fast and will come up very soon inshaAllah.

let me know if you want to know anything else or if you want to share anything please let me know.

Allah hafiz and best of luck in your master's education. Fazal (Mohammad Fazlur Rahman)
