The -extend 1.6 release has the reconCentral scheme, which should improve this. Some time ago I took the freedom of compiling it for 1.7.x...

The answer was for both of you. The leastSquares scheme for gradients ensures second order accuracy on arbitrary grids.

The implementation is different in OF from OpenCFD and in -dev/-extend,...
