Having recently only started to conduct CFD simulations myself in ANSYS, I'd say that a little knowledge in this area is very dangerous as with out some good knowledge about the numerical methods...

Surely there are experimental results in tables...

Surely there are experimental results in tables or charts which would save you the effort of trying to simulate the flow. Find a decent text book.
