I suspect that the selection box is too big and is selecting more faces than the ones you want to select, from the inside of the mesh.

If you don't share the "createPatchDict", I can only tell you that this error message says it all:
Cannot find file "" in directory "polyMesh/sets" in times 0 down...

paraFoam -block
It will show you in ParaView the aspect of the "blockMeshDict" in 3D, to make it easier to diagnose the problem.
