1. you're using gcc-4.3.3 - this is good, because this is a must for building OpenFOAM 1.6;

what gcc version are you using? Run the following command, so we can know what version it is:gcc -v
try to build the volField test...

June, have you tried seeing if the file "fvCFD.H" does exist in the folder "$FOAM_SRC/finiteVolume/lnInclude"? Actually, it should be a symbolic link... For example, try:ls -l...
