CFD Online has opened dedicated forums for the following visualization and post-processing tools:

• EnSight
• FieldView
• ParaView
• Tecplot

This is a test to see how it works out to create smaller dedicated forums. Our policy before has been to try to avoid splitting up the discussions too much with separate forums. However, we keep getting suggestions to do this and with our current forum software it is easy to later change our mind and merge back the forums to the main forum if the test does not work out.

If the test works out and we do see an increased number of posts about the visualization tools that have a dedicated forum we might change our mind and be more positive to open other dedicated forums about things like mesh generation softwares, special application areas like turbomachinery, aerospace, automotive, ... special subject areas like turbulence, combustion, numerics, ...

We will include a poll with this announcement to give you a chance to tell us what you think about this.

A little suggestion: a sticky thread or a link or a sticky link (?) would be useful in the new ParaView forum pointing to OpenFOAM's own ParaView+paraFoam one, since there are particular questions related to OpenFOAM+ParaView

The forum name is cfd-online.com and don't you think bringing post-processing separately might dilute the idea of discussing cfd stuff?
Also, people discuss post-processing anyway in each s/w forum.
It is only a suggestion tough.

Post-processing can and should of course be discussed in all s/w forum. I agree with your hesitation that discussions might get too spread out. But you could also view this as the opposite. Discussions about these post-processors now have their own forums and do not have to be spread out over all other forums. Besides, we keep getting suggestions to try more specialized forums and instead of saying no again we decided to give it a go now and test it.

What grid generation forums would you recommend us to open?

We decided to test dedicated post-processing/visualization forums first since it was easier to define which forums to open. With grid-generation the picture is less clear. You have a few dedicated codes that are obvious, like Pointwise, Gridpro, Ansa, Gridgen, ... Then you have a bunch of free codes like Gmsh, Netgen, enGrid and snappyHexMesh. Most of these free codes are not that frequently used and some are closely tied to OpenFOAM and already have dedicated forums in the OpenFOAM section. The CFD code vendors also have many grid-generation codes that to a varying degree are tied to their solvers. I'm thinking of codes like ICEM-CFD from Ansys and es-tools from CD adapco. The Ansys codes already have a dedicated Ansys meshing forum. Then there are a bunch of other codes that to some degree are mesh generators, like for example Sculptor.

We are not sure which dedicated grid generation forums to open. Please feel free to give us a list of the forums you would recommend us to open.

Hello,

we are maintaining our own forum for enGrid (see http://engits.eu/vanilla/) and I would be more than happy if we could migrate that to CFD online. Dealing with spam and abuse can be very annoying and CFD Online does a good job of that!

The forum is used regularly, although, obviously, not as frequently as some of the other forums here ;-)

OpenFOAM is the main target application for enGrid, but it is not restricted to that. So, personally, I would like to see it in a general meshing section.

Oliver, thanks for your suggestion. I would be very happy to include an enGrid forum also if we open a dedicated mesh generators section. I will add enGrid to my list of potential Mesh Generator sub-forums.
