I have a student version of Star-ccm+ for my thesis work in a company but with it I can use only 6 cores.
My task is to simulate Multiphase flow (Fuel tank refueling) with around 3.5M cells, time step is e-5 for the total physical time of around 2s. My computer configuration is like i7, 32 gb Ram, 2.85 ghz processor and 8 cores(though can use only 6) Is this configuration enough for my simulation? Someone told me that it will take 2 weeks for this kind of simulation which is too much considering the thesis period. The company has the industry license for the Star-ccm+ but at the moment all are occupied so they arranged student license for me |

There are too many physical and code-specific variables to answer your question without knowing a lot more information. If you have the simulation set up, run it for 100 timesteps (to get startup overhead out of the way) and then time the next 100. The second 100-step measure should give you rough idea of sec/timestep and you can try to extrapolate from there. Multiphase problems can be particularly devilish to converge sometimes due to real physical behavior (bubbles bursting, etc.) so that may make your extrapolation a bit understated, but it should give you a hint if it is going to take a day, a week, or a month.
