How can I split a region with plane?
 
I have some complex geometry that is contained within regions that I wish to split into different boundaries. I basically just want to use a plane to split the geometry. How do I do this without having to pass down a block for each split from the 3D CAD modeler?

It would be really nice if I could use a derived part plane to do this, I can get a plane setup easily but I do not know if I can use that to split the region.

I want to produce a clean edge at each boundary so doing a repair mesh and group selecting is not good enough in this case. Also the geometry is one patch, using angle definition doesn't produce good results.

There is probably a very easy way to do it but...a hackish way would be tto create a box intersecting the parts and doing a Boolean->Intersect, then deleting the parts of the box that you do nto want.

Thanks for the reply...

I should have said... Under parts, if I do a boolean intersect, I get an error message saying "Target Region not closed and manifold"...

Do you have any other ideas?

Maybe try creating that same box that intersects it, and using the repair tool at the part level to do an imprint? If that works, you will get a clean line you can split with.

Thanks for the direction... Looks like I got it to work... It was a little less straight forward than I imagined, but I guess I got it working now so it shouldn't matter...

I had to create a box, select both parts and do a surface repair.. Under the "Intersect" option, I selected the faces on each part that would be split... On intersect that would highlight the edge but would not create a feature edge.... while the edge is still highlighted, I went to "repair features" and used the "Flag Edges as Feature" command... that would create a curve that I could use to split the part...
