Particle size show on DEM solver

Hi frnds,

I am working on DEM solver of STAR-CCM+. I created some particles of size of 0.01 m diameter. But when I am seeing in the scalar scene, it is not showing the actual size of the particle. As a result, it is looking so tiny as compared to the whole system that it is not possible to distinguish it.

Could any one help me that how can I see the original size of the particle.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and to CFD, I just started my master thesis for which I use StarCCM+.

I'm having the exact same problem as chandi, so I will use this thread instead of a new one, I hope that's ok. So perhaps someone of you could help me.

I did one of the DEM tutorials (Blast Furnace), but when it came to the simulation, the particles are not displayed in the structure as they should. When I switch the Point Scale Mode from Scalar to Pixel, I can see the particles as pixels, but when Scalar is chosen, nothing appears.

Does anyone of you have an idea what's the problem? Is this some known bug or could it be an issue with the graphics?

Hi ,

I am also trying to visualize the DEM particles in the domain but couldn't see them. If anybody know how to create the appropriate scene for seeing those particle help.

Are you sure that the particles are being meshed properly?

In the scalar scene - outline and scalar properties you can change the representation of the selected part or region. If you can see the particles when represented as the original geometry and not as a meshed surface, it's probably a problem with your mesh.

Do we need to create spherical particle in our geometry as well as i went through the tutorial i found that we just need to specify particle diameter and it would be generated inside the region automatically....??

I just set up this simulation, and had no trouble with the visualization. In the scene, make sure you select particle diameter as the function on the point size scale field tab.

Can you just provide some snap shots of your simulation setup . it will be helpful to refer it will setup things easily.

Hello Kasey

Thank you for the hint, I wonder how I did not found this before on the manual (for the one interested, on the page 6241 and 2 tutorials from the page 8500).

I have more questions about it.
1/ It seems this method is working when you set it up before the computation, and then run the calculation. right?
2/ When using it, I do not succeed to get 'spherical' droplet, which is strange (they appear pixel, albeit I chose 'Point Scale Mode:Scalar'). Do you have any clue for it?
Moreover, only few of the droplets appear, not the full set
As you can see on the attached picture, for an injection of droplet into a pipe, only few 'droplets' appear. However, if I am plotting the droplets track file, one can see that droplets have been computed further downward the pipe.
3/ I want to get the droplet distribution profile at the exit of a pipe, for example. In StarCD I would have wrote a macro to calculate the droplet diameters at every cells on the outlet of the pipe. I checked in CCM on the report, but it's not possible to do so. Does anyone has idea about it?
