Shock Wave

Hello Everybody,

I am interested in simulating and visualizing the shock waves in the air with propagating spray.
Could anyone simulate and visualize a shock wave with Star-CD?

Sure you can simulate a shock wave - Star-CD Validation Test Cases pack has an example of shock tube simulation.

For visualization I can recommend plotting magnitude of density gradient (or density gradient squared - you can try what looks best). When plotted in grayscale it can give you nice Schliren-like pictures. Or you can plot an isosurface in 3D.

I've got it from my Star-CD vendor, it occupies 1 CD. I don't have it at hand right now to tell you the size of the shock tube case - may be I'll be able to send it to you via e-mail.

When you say i need to plot the magnitude of density gradient (or density gradient squared), it means that I first calculate the density, as one of my scalars, and then in post processing I calculate density gradient (or density gradient squared) and plot it in Registar 4, then I plot it in grayscale and get Schlieren like images. Is it correct?

Yes, you're right. BTW, I've found my Validation Test Cases CD. The shock tube example takes only 150 Kb when compressed

Ok, I've sent it. It's a simple 1D case, so don't expect much from visualization point of view, it's just to demonstrate simulation procedure.
