Hello,

I use the command "wallShearStress" in OpenFOAM and then I post process in tecplot (foamToTec360).

The problem is that, when I open TecPlot, the shear stresses are zero everywhere...

Could you explain me why?

Thank you!

Hi Daniele,

I don't have Tecplot to confirm this, but there are two possibilities:
  1. You're looking at the volume results, which are zero by default, since wallShearStress only calculates for the walls. You should try looking at the results on the walls+patches, not the volume.
  2. Or foamToTecplot360 is incomplete and doesn't convert values that only exist on the walls+patches.
Best regards,
Bruno

Hi Daniele,

You can try this utility: https://github.com/wyldckat/reconstr...ctSurfaceField - it can reconstruct the values on the walls onto the cell centers near the wall and this way you could represent the values in Tecplot.
Although I haven't tested if it will work as intended for the wall shear stress, so it's advisable for you to compare the results in ParaView first.

reconstructSurfaceField is not present in the official OpenFOAM distributions, so you'll have to follow the instructions from the beginning of that page.

Best regards,
Bruno

The data ist stored in the boundaryMesh_XX.plt files in the boundaryMesh folder with XX the number of data sets.
You can easily open and plot the data in tecplot.

Has this problem been solved in newer version of OpenFOAM?

I am using version 5 and foamToTecplot command is not used in this version.

I can open case files directly from Tecplot and able to visualise U,p and other fields fine. However, wallShearStress from OpenFOAM is zero across all walls.

Any ideas?

Tecplot 360 2019 R1 *might* solve your issue. Previously our direct OpenFOAM loader was not loading the boundary data. In 2019 R1 updated the OpenFOAM loader load the boundary information.

Sorry, did not see a reply to this post.

I will install Tecplot 360 2019 R1 to see if it works on there.

Currently, I am trying to calculate the wall shear stresses using equations on Tecplot, to no avail.

Do you know if there is a macro that calculates wall shear stress?

Hi,

I thought would update. Using Tecplot 360 2019 R1 did not seem to work, the wall shear stress is still zero across all surfaces.

If you're able to share the data, our support staff can have a look. Contact us at support@tecplot.com

Thanks,
Scott
