Cycle-to-cycle variations of pollutant emissions and transient states are two
major difficulties of Diesel combustion simulation as they are very dependent of
the turbulent flow prediction. In comparison with standard RANS approaches,
Large-Eddy Simulations are able to represent an important part of the turbulent
flow and can therefore predict such unsteady phenomena. The aim of this work is
to apply Large-Eddy Simulation to the modelling of combustion in Diesel engines.
For this purpose, a turbulent combustion model developed at IFPEN in previous
studies will be coupled to pollutant submodels for nitric oxides and soot
formation, and adapted to variable pressure environment. Then, calculations will
be performed using the fully compressible LES code AVBP co-developed by IFPEN
and CERFACS with a first validation on a Diesel type auto-igniting spray with
several measurements as heat-release and soot emissions. Finally, several Diesel
engine operating points will be simulated and results will be compared with
experimental measurements of pressure, soot, NOx and other chemical species.

Candidates must have a M.S. degree with a background in numerical simulation,
combustion and fluid dynamics. Good English communication skills (writing and
oral)are also required.
