PAID DIPLOMA OR MASTER THESIS
Modelling and Simulation of a Spin Flash Dryer
Ref.Nr. DA26

We offer students studying Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics,
Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering, or similar disciplines the chance to work
on their master thesis within the scope of the following research project.

SCOPE OF THIS PROJECT:
Spin flash dryers are continuously operating pneumatic drying
systems with a wide range of applications. Whereas ordinary flash
drying systems are usually restricted to drying of granular material,
the spin flash dryer introduces an extra chamber with spinning
blades, allowing for heavier pastes and slurries to be processed.
While feed material enters the process chamber the rotating blades
reduce the past to smaller pieces. In Consequence these small
pieces are dried in an upwards directed hot air stream.
This project is about using the tools available in commercial software (AVL
Fire, gProms) to simulate the described drying process. You will develop models
that will help understand flow, deagglomeration and drying kinetics inside the
spin flash dryer. You will work in close collaboration with our simulations and
process engineering team.

YOUR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Extensive literature research on existing models
• Implementation of existing models in AVL Fire, gProms
• Model adaptation and improvement
• Comparison with pre-generated experimental data

WE OFFER:
A multidisciplinary and dynamic research environment in the area of
pharmaceutical engineering. Mentoring and on-the-job training by our qualified
staff and an adequate payment as well as the chance for personal and technical
development in the area of pharmaceutical engineering.

We look forward to receiving your application!
