TitlePostDoc in hybrid RANS/LES modelling of aircraft spoilers
CategoryPostDoc Position
EmployerAerodynamics group, University of Southampton
LocationUnited Kingdom, Southampton
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateWednesday, May 15, 2013
Description:
RANS calculations are routinely used in industry to model external aerodynamic
flows. However, RANS turbulence models, even if at second-moment closure,
perform poorly in conditions in which the flow features very high curvature,
separation and large-scale unsteadiness. Also, RANS predictions lack the broad
frequency content required for faithful computation of aerodynamically generated
noise. In contrast, LES offers, when applied appropriately, much higher
fidelity in these complex sub-regions, but are very expensive when applied
across the whole flow domain. Zonal – or embedding – strategies, in which LES
patches are embedded within a RANS background offer a way forward, but pose
major challenges associated with sub-domain coupling and matching.

In this collaborative project between the University of Southampton, leading the
project, and Imperial College London, we aim to develop and employ a framework
for embedding high-fidelity eddy-resolving methods, such as LES or hybrid
RANS/LES, into ‘lower-cost’ approaches like RANS to enable a breakthrough in
Reynolds number accessible with high-accuracy flow and noise simulations. One of
the key challenges is the development of appropriate two-way interface
conditions required for such an embedding approach. The development of the
coupling approach will initially be conducted on a canonical configuration for
which reliable DNS/LES data for rigorous assessment/validation exists. Once
proven, the embedding approach will be applied to an engineering-related
configuration, such as a spoiler on a wall or a wing.

Applicants must have a PhD in Physics/Engineering/Maths or equivalent and a
strong background in fluid dynamics and numerical modelling. Relevant experience
at post-graduate/post-doctoral level in turbulence modelling, in particular
hybrid RANS/LES methods would be desirable. A strong mathematical background and
excellent programming skills are necessary. The applicants are expected to work
as part of a team of researchers studying turbulent flows and to contribute to
the dissemination of high quality research results. The appointment will be for
22 months and with a tentative start
date around June 2013. The closing date for this post is 31 March 2013.
