Description:
Cambridge University Engineering Department seeks applicants for a PhD research project on the CFD 
simulation of fan aerodynamics. Full funding is available. The position is anticipated to commence in 
October 2013. The project is partly funded by Rolls-Royce plc.  The candidate will explore the use of 
state of the art numerical methods and turbulence models to improve predictive performance. 

Project objectives:

-      Explore the use and develop advanced turbulence models and numerical schemes (RANS, DES, LES 
...)

-	Develop numerical models that predict fan aerodynamics

-	Validate these models by comparison with laboratory experiments larger scale data.



Desired skills and characteristics

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2.1 degree in a subject 
such as Engineering, Maths or Physics. The project will involve numerical modeling and high 
performance computing . Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics would be an advantage, but is 
not essential. The candidate will be expected to conduct work with Rolls-Royce plc and thus should 
have good interpersonal skills and be prepared for some travel within the UK.
