Direct numerical simulations of shock/turbulence interactions

Applications to a PhD position within the Department of Mechanical Engineering
at Imperial College London are sought for a start no later than October 2013.

The study of the interaction between a planar shock wave and flow inhomogeneity
has been motivated over half a century mainly for its relevance to high-speed
flight physics. However, such interaction is increasingly relevant to energy and
healthcare applications, particularly when the gas dynamics significantly
departs from that of an ideal gas.

The PhD project will primarily focus on (i) compressibility effects in a
turbulent and dense gas (van der Waals type) in the vicinity of the liquid-vapor
saturation curve, (ii) the interaction of the turbulence with a shockwave. More
details will be provided at the interview.

The work will be carried out using both theoretical and numerical methods.
Applicants are therefore expected to show evidences of a strong background in
(i) fluid dynamics, (ii) mathematics, (iii) and numerical methods. 

** PLEASE NOTE **

The project is fully funded (i.e. fees + living expenses) by a governmental
award. The award is competitive and available in full only to UK citizens. To be
considered, candidates are expected to hold (or soon to be awarded) a First
class honors degree (MEng or MSc). 

EU citizens may apply but the award would only cover the tuition fees and the
PhD candidate would have to finance her/his living expenses. Non-EU citizens are
not eligible for the award.
