TitleFunded PhD: Aero-engine installation aerodynamics (Rolls Royce)
CategoryPhD Studentship
EmployerCranfield University
LocationUnited Kingdom, Bedfordshire, Cranfield
InternationalNo, only national applications will be considered
Closure DateMonday, July 01, 2013
Description:
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the Department of Power and
Propulsion, Cranfield University, in the field of aero-engine installation
performance and aerodynamics. The research is in collaboration with Rolls Royce.

The integration of a propulsion system with an airframe is a vital step in the
development of any air vehicle. Current aircraft designs are coming to an
important point where it is vital to evaluate the engine and airframe in a more
detailed way at the preliminary design stage. Modern engine design trends have
been to reduce the specific thrust and to develop engines with large fan
diameters. Consequently, the challenge of installing these systems onto the
airframe has become more difficult due to the reduced surface clearance,
increased interaction between the engine and the airframe as well as the
increased drag and weight. It is envisaged that these issues will become more
important for future aircraft and that the choice of engine design and
installation configurations will need to be assessed in a more integrated way.

The research will focus on the development of a system for the assessment of
the aero-engine installation effects at a preliminary design stage. The work
will require research in the areas of nacelle and intake aerodynamics as well
as engine and aircraft performance modelling.

Entry requirements
Applicants for the post must have a first-class or upper second-class degree in
engineering or a related area. An aerospace background would be a distinct
advantage as would experience of computational aerodynamics, aero-engine
modelling and programming. Studentships will be paid a tax-free stipend of at
approximately £13,500 p.a. for 3 years, plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate.
