The Fluid Mechanics Group at the Institute of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics
at Ilmenau University of Technology in Germany invites applications for a
three-year PhD student position. The PhD student will work on direct numerical
simulations of turbulent convection in cylindrical or rectangular closed cells.
The simulation programs exist already and are based on finite difference and/or
spectral element methods. The focus of the project is on the dynamics of
near-wall structures and their importance for the turbulent heat transfer. The
project is closely connected to convection experiments which will be conducted
at the same time in the „Barrel of Ilmenau“, the worldwide largest laboratory
experiment of turbulent convection, and the SCALEX high pressure SF6 facility.
The research project is embedded in a nationwide Research Unit which is funded
by the German Research Foundation. The candidate should have a master or diploma
degree in engineering, mathematics or physics. A firm knowledge of the
mathematical and physical basics is necessary. Experiences in scientific
computing or fluid dynamics/turbulence are desirable, but not necessary. The
payment follows the German Public Service Payscale (about 57000 Euro/year).
