CategoryPostDoc Position
EmployerNational Renewable Energy-National Bioenergy Center
LocationUnited States, Colorado, Golden
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateThursday, May 30, 2013
Description:
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, is the
nation's primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of
renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. NREL's National Bioenergy
Center has an immediate opening for a full time (40 hours per week)
Postdoctoral Researcher. The initial appointment is for one year, with possible
renewal for up to three years.
Conduct and participate in R&D to improve our mechanistic understanding and
ability to accurately model transport and reaction processes in both individual
biomass particles and in biomass entrained flows undergoing thermochemical
conversion using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Formulate and test
computational models of reactive, multiphase heat/mass transfer across multiple
length and time scales. Participate in multi-disciplinary project teams with
researchers of diverse backgrounds (catalyst development teams, chemical
engineers, and physical chemists) investigating a variety of prospective
biomass conversion unit operations, such as catalytic fast pyrolysis, vapor
phase upgrading, or gasification. Document work in detailed technical memos and
milestone reports. Publish and present key findings in peer-reviewed journals
and at regional, national, and international scientific meetings. Maintain
exemplary attention to environmental safety and health issues.
Candidates must have a recent doctoral degree (within three years) in Chemical
or Mechanical Engineering (or a closely related field) and expertise in CFD.
Strong scientific writing skills demonstrated by experience authoring quality
scientific papers. Excellent verbal/interpersonal communications skills.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a research team or individually with
limited supervision
Preferred Qualifications
An excellent academic record with peer-reviewed publications in CFD. Knowledge
of one or more of the existing CFD software packages/codes well suited for
multi-phase model development and experience with high-performance computing
applications of CFD. Experience synergistically using experimental and
computational approaches to determine rate controlling factors and/or
mechanisms. Familiarity with thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic
biomass including pyrolysis and gasification. Applicants must apply at
www.nrel.gov/employment. Search on "Job Openings" for requisition 3019.
