Two PhD student positions with scholarships for 3 years are available
immediately within the Fluid Dynamics Research Group (FDRG) at Curtin University
in Perth, Western Australia. The students will work on the Fluid Dynamics and
Heat Transfer characteristics of Unsteady Impinging Jets. This work is part of a
research project funded by the Australian Research Council, and involves
collaboration with Warwick University (UK) and Oregon State University (USA).

The candidates must have a first-class degree in Engineering, Physics,
Scientific Computing or Applied Mathematics. They must be literate and fluent in
English, and should be 'self-starters' capable of independent critical thinking
and problem solving. Enthusiasm for scientific computing is essential, and it
would help if they have studied turbulence in the past, and are familiar with
Linux and OpenFOAM.

The successful candidate will be involved in both experimental, and
computational fluid dynamics research, and will develop an expertise in
turbulence and heat transfer. They will develop expertise in CFD (using
OpenFOAM), C++, Python (numpy, scipy), Linux (Debian), LaTeX and High
Performance Computing. The candidates will be expected to produce a number of
Large Eddy Simulation models of turbulent impinging jets using OpenFOAM, and
will enjoy the experience of working with the iVEC Pawsey facility, (a global
top100 supercomputer) in Perth. The candidates will also be involved in the
design and running of a suitable experimental test set-up. Prior experience in
experimental research in the area of Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer is desirable.

The selected candidates will work alongside experts in Fluid Dynamics and Heat
Transfer at Curtin University in Perth. They are both expected to produce a PhD
thesis, and to make a significant contribution to a number of high quality
journal papers. Current scholarships for PhD level provide approximately A$
23000 per annum and a tuition fee waiver. The candidates may have the
opportunity to visit partner institutions in the UK and USA, and to attend
international and national conferences.
