Oxy-combustion is emerging as the most likely low-cost technology solution for
both carbon capture and
simultaneous reduction of NOx and SOx emissions.
The Université Libre de Bruxelles together with the University of Utah is
actively involved in the
investigation of different fundamental aspects of oxy–coal combustion.
Experimental and modeling activities are carried out about to elucidate the
mechanisms of pyrolysis and
devolatilization of coal particles and the successive heterogeneous char
oxidation. Moreover, the gas phase
reactions of the gas and tar products are investigated with the main objective
of identifying the limiting
reactions and developing simplified approaches for application in the context of
high-fidelity Large Eddy
Simulations of full-scale boilers.
In this framework, we seek for a PhD student, to work on the following topics:
1. Investigation of the products formed during the pyrolysis and
devolatilization process of the coal
particles under modified atmospheres. Identification of approaches based on a
limited number of lumped
species, together with their pyrolysis models, to describe the devolatilization
process of the different fuels.
2. Analysis of mechanisms for the gas phase reactions of the main released
hydrocarbons (gas and tar).
3. Development of reduction strategies for the use of realistic simplified
kinetic models in the context of
very expensive Large Eddy Simulations.
