Multiphase flows are common in nature and in industry. Today’s technology and advanced modelling tools allow successful and fast simulation of positive displacement rotating multiphase machines within variety of CFD solvers and by use of lower order models. Such techniques are then applied to design and analysis of positive displacement machines such as compressors, expanders, roots blowers, pumps etc.
Creating simulations, however, is still a complex process owing to the intricacies of physics behind multiphase flows. It is therefore important to be aware of the concepts which underpin the models and their applications.
The 4th Short course/forum on CFD in rotating positive displacement machines will take place at City, University of London on 7th and 8th September 2019 just before the 11th International Conference on Compressors and Their Systems. This year, the theme of the course is on the speed and efficiency in calculating multiphase flows in rotating machinery by use of CFD and lower order models. In this course, attendees will get an in-depth experience on stability and accuracy of several CFD solvers in calculating multiphase flows in positive displacement machines. They will also learn about advances in grid generation, modelling of leakage flows and conjugate heat transfer, latest tools, new techniques, and much more.
In recent times, optimising oil injection to reduce emission is hot topic in the screw machine industry. Therefore, this course is crucial for R&D in these areas. Subsequently it will have significant impact on applications for all rotating machinery where energy efficiency is an important issue.
