Course: CFD for In-Flight Icing, Oct 2002, Spain

ICING COURSE: The expanding role of CFD for in-flight icing certification.

From October 7 to 9, 2002 in Barcelona, Spain

Aircraft taking off from or landing at airports and/or flying through icing clouds encounter the problem of ice formation on critical surfaces and on engine components. This can jeopardize flight by altering aerodynamic performance and handling qualities. While such problems have been studied for over half a century by icing tunnels and flight tests at specialized facilities, simulation by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is proving itself a low-cost, flexible and effective aid-to-design-and-certification tool. The current trend is to bring to bear 3D simulation tools and new physical models, to more completely explore the flight and icing envelopes, optimize design and focus tunnel and flight tests.

This timely course should be of value to all involved in in-flight icing, as it will illustrate the state-of-the-art in CFD icing simulations, linking theory with applications through demonstrations and training, using the FENSAP-ICE GUI-driven modular system. It is structured to be of equal interest to users of icing codes, designers of ice protection equipment (airplane, helicopter, engine and UAV), ice detection and protection manufacturers, flight simulator manufacturers, aircraft accident investigators, regulators and ACO's. The instructors bring a wealth of aggregate information as scientists, engineers, designers, regulators and code developers.
