The public defence of the Ph.D. thesis of Niels G. Deen, which is titled:
An Experimental and Computational Study of Fluid Dynamics in Gas-Liquid Chemical Reactors
has taken place on Friday November 30, 2001 at the Aalborg University Esbjerg in Denmark.

Abstract:
A very large part of the processes in the chemical process industry concerns gas-liquid flows. In order to obtain well operating gas-liquid contactors a thorough understanding of the flow phenomena of gas-liquid flows is vital. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a tool that is increasingly used in the design, scale-up, optimization and trouble-shooting of chemical reactors. In this thesis, several aspects of CFD for gas-liquid flows in chemical reactors were studied. In order to validate the CFD simulations particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used.
