Hi

I work with engines, specifically in the field of engine thermal analysis using CFD. At my company, we use ANSA and StarCCM+

I was going through the ANSA user manual for version 15x. On page 671, the guide mentions "triangular elements" and "orthogonal triangular elements" - they have also provided pictures.

However, no mention is made as to which is better and why. Also, no mention is made regarding a rule of thumb, that will help the ANSA user understand when to use "orthogonal triangular elements" over "triangular elements". I would like to know the answers to these questions. Kindly help.

Hi,

In star ccm you can able to create volume mesh independent of the ansa surface mesh. You can able to have the same quality of volume mesh in starccm with triangular and ortho tria elements in ANSA when you don't change any other mesh criteria

Hello,

Indeed, if you wish to use Ansa only to clean up your geometry and then use Star CCM+ to generate the volume mesh, you can use any type of tria elements since Star CCM+ will regenerate the global mesh and uses the initial mesh only as a geometry (like if it would be a STL file).

But you can also use Ansa for the whole meshing process and output directly from Ansa the mesh file ready to be used for the simulation. if so, it is better to use trias rather than ortho trias.
If you use triangular option, Ansa will try to generate equilateral triangular and tetrahedral elements which is a better shape for CFD algorithms.

If you use Ansa for the global meshing process, all this process (surface mesh, boundary layer if you need some and volume elements can be totally automated through the Batch meshing capability of Ansa.
