Problem Meshing a Cylindrical sector in ICEM
 

Hi,

I am trying to mesh a periodic, cylindrical sector (90 degrees) without much luck and was wondering if anyone could help me.

The sector runs to zero radius, and I would like to output a structured, multiblock mesh. I therefore have a y-block at the apex of the sector, with a standard hex block above it (please see the attached pictures).

I can generate the pre-mesh that I want (again see pictures), but when I go to convert the mesh to a multiblock mesh, ICEM exits with a segmentation fault.

I was wondering if anyone else had had the same problem, and if someone might help me to output this mesh successfully.

P.S. I have seen other approaches where just the y-block is used to mesh the domain, however, I am using this relatively simple geometry and blocking as a test case for something more complex. For this reason I would like to keep the blocking strategy as shown in the pictures.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I have been able to successfully output a multiblock mesh of a quarter o-block/yblock as you have shown; that is not a problem for me.

The difference between my blocking and yours is that in mine there is an extra block above (i.e. radially outwards from) the quarter o block, and for reasons that are not clear to me, this seems to prevent me from outputting a multiblock mesh. As stated in my original post I would like to make my blocking strategy work if possible.

If you have a look at the ICEM files attached in my original post you will see what I mean with regards to the difference in blocking strategy.

It worked for me...

To get this pic, all I did was open your project, right click on premesh to output multiblock mesh, then right click on domains to display Solid Wire...

But then I tried again with 13.0, and then i got your segmentation violation... What version were you using?

I don't recall this being a problem at 13.0 or it being fixed. 14.0 was released nearly a year ago, so if that is an option for you, go for it.

If not, then perhaps some other blocking strategy would work. You could create the exact same topology as you want with a quarter Ogrid instead of a Yblock... You could even start with Far's example, rescale the Ogrid to push it closer to the wedge, then split it to get that extra split in your topology and then merge the outer blocks (initialize output blocks and then merge).

Thanks for having a look at this. The version I was running when I was getting the segmentation fault was 12.1. I've now upgraded to 14.0, as you suggested, and it seems to work ok.
