Hi,
I'm am trying to create a mesh in ANSYS ICEM. it is a 3d mesh consisting of a lot of roughness elements. Since the elements are made up of cubes, i figured the best meshing would be that of a blocking approach. However, my computer freezes every time i tried to mesh it. What would be a rule of thumb here in terms of computer memory. Is 32 GB of RAM enough for high volume meshes? Or 64 GB?

David, I commonly work with hexa meshes of 80~100 million elements. When you are doing your blocking, keep all of your refinement down, then do your edge parameters last. I wrote a script that turns the pre-mesh into unstructured mesh then cnverts it to the right output.

On a 24GM RAM machine, this process uses much more than the avalible memory, and takes a few hours to complete. I usually run the script at the end of the day, then come in the next day to a big fat .msh file sitting on my desktop. It is slow, but if done overnight, it does not waste any time.
