Importing using IGES file format
 

Hello all,

I am trying to mesh a muffler assembly of an engine. when I import the entire assembly into ICEM using the IGES file format, all the surfaces are combined under a single name. It becomes extremely tedious to clean up the geometry because of the number of planes and bolts and washers not needed for fluid flow analysis.
I would like to know if there is a way to import it in multiple parts instead of all the surfaces under a single name, so that when i am working on one part I can switch the others off. This would greatly help me reduce my time and effort.

I tried to create IGES for individual parts and then import in ICEM but they do not fit in their respective places. Any kind of help or suggestion is greatly appreciated.

just different part in icem so you can switch between them.
when i work with designmodeler, i name those part there, i export my geometry using agdb file format. then i use workbench reader in icem to import it. the importation is done with all the name given in designmodeler so i don't need to create parts.

Thank you for your reply. I have the current assembly model in Pro/E and when I go to export it I do not find any agdb file format.
Also I am using the ICEM stand alone without the use of workbench.

agdb is a ansys designmodeler extension. you only find it in designmodeler, if you are using pro/e try exporting in step. that's the format i use. may be someone else can give another option...

yea, it depends how you create the IGES file. if it is created with separate parts, etc. then you will get separate parts in ICEM CFD... If not, then not.

Do you have access to the Pro-E interface with ICEM CFD? That is the best way to bring parts across (IGES is one of the worst ways), and they will come with all their original ProE part names.

If not, then there are tricks you can use to help you select entities in ICEM CFD more efficiently.

I tried to make individual IGES files for each and every part of the assembly and then import them one by one. The problem is that when i go to merge them they all get located at one single place. this method does not respect the assembly positions.

Also I do not have pro/e interface with ICEM CFD. Is there any other way i can solve this issue of mine ? thank you very much.

it's weird i already worked with assembly in pro/e, but instead of importing it in icem directly, i was passing by DM. step file works great, also when exporting i select solid and shell... can you make a stop first by Designmodler see how it looks there and then load it in icem ...

share some pictures of your assembly if you can...

Hello,

I do not have DM in my system and I doubt if the IT will ever install it for me since 99% of the employees use pro/E.
People who do analysis here at my company use hypermesh and I am the only person who is using ICEM, and i do not want to go with the herd. hopefully there is a better way out of this situation else i will have to learn hypermesh. and am not very keen on doing that.

I use Parasolid Format for import into ICEM. You might try it to see whether your assembly is read in with different part names.
