Why must create plan and sketch?
Hi all,

I am new to CFD and am learning ANSYS DM. Can any kind soul please tell me when and why I must create a plan and then a sketch for almost every new line I intended to draw? By following the tutorials I still don't get that how and how far it will negatively affect the later steps (surface/solid generation/operations), will it? I have little experience with simple CAD drawing but it doesn't help at all.

Thank you in advance!

What are you drawing?..
Perhaps you are making it more complicated than it could be

Hi Jrunsten,

I haven't have my own geometry. I am still following the tutorials and try to understand the drawing operations. But I get confused at this very first plane and sketch thing. For example a 2D tutorial require me to create a plane and a lot of sketches, while I can just draw directly if using other CAD software. A 3D tutorial need a plane whenever I need to draw something that is not on the same plane, while intuitively with a suitable (x,y,z) coordinate I should be able to position drawings in a 3D space directly...

Things will get 3d later. you better start with a plane so you can decide where to extrude. that the basic step of drawing... when one draws a cube, he does not enter the coordinates of the 8 corners , then link them with a line and then create a surface and then a volume... see how long it is... instead, one draws a square (on a plane) then extrude it along the z direction...
