2D simulation on symmetry plane of 3D geometry

Hello CFD-Online members.

I'm designing the aero package of a Formula Student car for my thesis project. I have imported a strongly simplified model of our team's car, with wheels, into DesignModeler and made an air object around the car, with a symmetry plane. This is what I would use for a 3D simulation of the flow around the car.

My supervisor asked me to start by running a 2D simulation over the car, to get the hang of things. I wonder if it's possible to somehow extract the 2D geometry of the symmetry plane and mesh only that, or do I have to somehow figure out the coordinates of the car geometry at the symmetry plane, and work with that?

Added a picture for some clarification. Thanks for any help!
