I am trying to mesh a cylinder using ICEM. I have tried following a tutorial for using the O-grid, but it did not turn out quite the way I wanted it to. I want to mesh the cylinder as shown in the attached pictures. What would be the best way to block the geometry?

Do you want image 1 or image 2? You only need to split you first block. Or use C-grid and then smooth mesh.

Thanks for your reply. I think the second image better represents the flow physics, so I would prefer it. However, at this point, I would like to know how to do either one of them. You mentioned I would have to split the first block once. Does that mean I don't have to create an O-grid. I have tried without using O-grid, but the mesh does not wrap around the cylinder.

For example two easy options:
1º - From image 1 to 3. There is obviously a better solution. 2º - From image 4 to 5. With C-grid blocking. You can use smooth tool to get a result more similar to your pictures. Experts maybe advise you other way. |

Thank you for your examples. Regarding the last picture you posted, is it possible to use the smoothing operation to smooth out the sharp angles at the interior edges of the block? For example, the interior mesh that wraps around the half cylinder have the shapes of half rectangles. Is it possible to make them into concentric half circles? I was able to get something similar to your pictures. I am also wondering how I would get the mesh to span from left to right as it gets further away from the cylinder instead of just wrapping around the cylinder for the entire geometry?
