The inflation tool is used to control how the layers of mesh near the wall grow toward the mean flow area. The type of flow you have, your choice of turbulence model, weather or not there is heat transfer etc. will all determine what kind of mesh you will need near the walls. to help properly create this mesh the inflation tool can be used.
