Importing a 2D sketch into design modeler and meshing
Hello,
I want to perform a 2D analysis on a 3D airfoil I have created using Inventor. Using design modeler, I created a mid-surface and moved on to meshing. When generating a mesh, it shows as 3D... Is there any workaround the current issue I have or is there any other method of importing a 2D sketch into the design modeler. Note: I have also tried .dwg but it results with an error stating "the selected file is of an unsupported or unconfigured geometry type" Please help me with this issue. Thanks. |
make the geometry again in 2d

Thanks for the reply.
I did create a 2D sketch of the geometry in Inventor and saved it as .dwg as I mentioned earlier, which resulted in an error. Are you suggesting to create a 2D sketch in the design modeler? The reason I am doing it on a CAD package is because it has complex curves and modifications to the sketch are quicker. |
The problem is that you can't import a 3D geometry and then perform a 2d analysis. For a 2D analysis you need to specify it in the project properties before importing the geometry (under "Advanced Geometry Options > Analysis Type > 2D").
I often recreate easy geometry directly in DM but if you have more complex curves with mathematical formulas it is way better to import them directly in DM. So the easiest way is to create a mid surface in Inventor, then import it in DM as 2D. Here you also need to pay attention to the sketching plane, for 2D analysis in Ansys you need to be in the XY plane otherwise you'll end up with an error. Have fun ;) |
not sure what sort of files can be imported into workbench from a CAD package. make sure ansys can read dwg format first.
|
Yes it can, there are a lot of formats supported by DM:

So I removed the extrusion from my model leaving only the 2D Sketch. I then created a surface and saved it as a 'Step' file. I then imported it into the design modeler as 2D and it worked successfully. Note: I also copied the sketch to the XY plane which resolved the errors in the meshing part. It doesn't work in any other plane like you mentioned earlier. |
Thanks for your feedback, and happy that my inputs helped you to solve your problem.

Problem in getting periodic boundary conditions
Can anybody help me ??? I am trying to simulate a simple geometry in ANSYS WORKBENCH and i have to give periodic boundary condition to it . But the same is not taking it as periodic boundary condition !!! when imported in FLUENT it is giving error message as "Failed to make zones periodic"

is the number of mesh node on periodic boundary are equal? |
import Autocad geometry to Ansys Workbench with proof
