I'm a fresher in CFD. I created 2D moving mesh using Star cd-3.26. Now i want to make it in 3D. The piston is bowl type. i created the model using solid works 2010 and plan to do meshing in Gambit and analysis in Star CD. Anyone can help how to start from the geomtryitself. please also tell how to mesh an engine in gambit.

try first to import your geometry in gambit (step file should be ok)

Thank you for your reply sir. I created one geometry with cylinder(stroke),valve seat, runner and valve in solid works. For importing to gambit and star cd,what type of geometry is required?wheater its full stroke length or clearence volume? In gambit how can i mesh. I did one gambit tutorial related to volume split. I guess that volume method will be usefull for my model also.

import your geometry in gambit, mesh it, apply boundary conditions and export your mesh for your solver.
But before, I would check that at least one mesh export possibility in gambit could match your mesh import in star cd. Except generic solver, I don't see any other http://my.fit.edu/itresources/manual...tm#menu_solver

there are no guide for meshing an engine or whatever.
I depends on the geometry. Import your geometry, extract the fluid domain. From here you can mesh the domain on the fly. But for sure you will have to split it many times, for better quality mesh

Thank you sir for your valuable information. Can u tell how to mesh the valve region? With my limited knowldege i came to know that layer type meshing is used.i dont know much about that.if you dont mind can you tell how to do layering in valve region?

ok quick...
let say you have a rectangle, and the upper edge will move (up or down) *define the upper edge as rigid body and set its motion you also have to specify the cell height parameter from which the solver will collapse or create the cell layers *define the lower edge as stationnary Of course your rectangle is meshed with quad. Don't expect to get your model working at first attempt. But in this way you will understand how it work. Always testing with very simple example...

You could try meshing in es-ice which is quite easy for engine simulation
