Dimples in mesh

4 Attachment(s)
I have a thin (24 cell height) structured mesh that is located between two surfaces. In one location, a section of the mesh "dimples" in, sort of like the top face of the blocking has been associated to the bottom surface. The thing is, this problem only affects part of the block, and there is no break in either the top or the bottom surface that could account for the dimple.

This problem occurred before and I solved it by simply splitting the block right through the affected portion of the block. I then associated the new block edges to the surface. However, due to the blocking configuration, I can not repeat that solution here.

Any suggestions or solutions?

So I still don't know why this error popped up, but I found a solution of sorts. Instead of splitting the block, I split the face that was having the problems. I then associated the new faces and edges to the geometry.

Hi niablis,

in my experience this problem happens, when you associate a face to a surface, not a selected surface, but an automated selection of the nearest surface. You said that you only have a thin layer? That might be a typical circumstance. The face was closer to the "wrong" surface than to the "right" surface. In such a case i prefer to assiciate to surface by part. So, both wall in different parts, so that only one possible nearest surface remains (though tight bendes within the same face remains a problem). Or you modify the respective edges by setting control points deforming the edge into a spline or multilinear edge.

With regards,
Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

Thanks for your reply. I did try associating by both part and closest surface. The both had the same result. The really odd part of the problem is that only part of the associated face had the error. It was almost as if 10% of the face decided not to use the same association that the other 90% did.

I would send you the project file, but it is massive.

can you please attach your tin and blocking files?

niablis June 6, 2016 13:44

I can't. My .tin file is 7,040 KB, and even compressed, the .zip file is 2,091 KB, larger than what the forum allows me to upload. Is there perhaps a work around to this?

Far June 6, 2016 16:25

yes. Upload file on dropbox or google drive and past link here. Dont forget to make file public if you are uploading it on google drive.

niablis June 9, 2016 13:12

I should have thought of that... Ok, here is the link: https://drive.google.com/folderview?...kE&usp=sharing

The two locations are, 1) near the nose, and 2) slightly under the intersection of the body and the wing's leading edge.

where are the dimples?

Huh... When I opened up the files that I posted, I could not find them either. Then I opened up the original project, they reappeared. I will repost all files in the same folder.

I also failed to mention earlier that the dimples were located in the "BL_Mesh_Body" part and setting scan plane #8 to 0,1 is the best way to view them.

Hi Far, did you perhaps get a chance to look at the posted files?

Far June 17, 2016 04:19

i will look it by tom
