Urgent Help Needed: Rotate mesh in ICEM

Hi

I am trying to take advantage of symmetry in my model. I have created mesh in only half of the model. Then I rotate the mesh. I again associate the elements to the parts (Edit Mesh- Repair Mesh- Associate mesh to Geometry)< because I believe this will associate the newly created mesh elements (which Have been created due to rotation of mesh) to the surface parts needed for boundary conditions.
After that, I merge meshes on the common part- edit mesh- merge nodes- merge meshes- Select the part (which is called Surf in my model).

However, when I import into FLUENT, it shows critical error and aborts.

Please help what I may be doing wrong. I need some education in this respect.

There are penetrating elements in your mesh, and also you can merge two volumes with one hexa layer instead of pyramid-tet

Hey Kushal,

Thank you for your reply.

I was able to get over the problem of penetrating elements- import into FLUENT was successful. But I do not know how to use a hexa layer for merging. I am still getting pyramid elements.

When you said that I should use a hexa layer to merge instead of pyramid elements, could you please explain how should I execute that? What steps should I follow to merge with hexa layer, instead of the pyramid elements?

I am keeping the "Merge Nodes " option OFF while rotating the mesh.

Thank you

You just delete the pyramid elements and extrude one face to the distance. (the distance between the two faces) after that merge using node merging option with some good tolerance value.

Okay. I understand that.

If it is possible to do it that way, then can we not just keep the "Merge Nodes" Option on while copying/mirroring the mesh? Shouldn't that work? It did not work in my case, so I ask.

My understanding is that both the methods- the one suggested by you (involving deletion of pyras and extrusion with merging) and the one involving rotating the mesh with merge nodes on will yield the same result.

Please advise.

Thank you

You are correct, result will be same, only you have to do at end merge nodes with tolerance.
