Icem cfd 17.2
 

Hi everyone,
Been using version 14 of ICEM CFD, and now updated to version 17.2. The new version won't allow me to import IGES geometry files, from File> import geometry etc. Looking at the manual it says this feature is now only supported using linux OS or by installing a supplementary application and using the beta version on windows however I am unable to find this link. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi Eva,
do you still have version 14 installed?


If yes, go into the installation directory of icem; something like C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v140\icemcfd\win64_amd\
here you should find a directory dif. Copy this folder into the corresponding location of version 17.2.


This should give access to the required feature again.



This method might be unsupported, but i never had problems in the later versions, tested till v18.


Ideally, you should find such files in the customer portal. I never had any access through work, so i don't know where to find it. Maybe your account manager can help you, if required.

@Sebastion Engel: I have never understood this reduction in functionality of ICEM. Why not make the import possible by default? Do you know the reason behind this new 'feature'?

i can only speculate.


Maybe it is to increase effort to avoid piracy. There is a paywall for the costumer portal. This missing essential feature would nudge users into paying for support.



Maybe there are updates for that importer more often, than there are annual realases. I don't manage software at my work, so i never checked the customer portal.



Or maybe, they want to make ICEM more inconvenient, so people change to a different mesher.
ICEM is not even listed under "all products" on the ansys homepage anymore.

Through the grapevine, I heard that ANSYS sees a safety risk. That the translators got infected with malicious threats. So users can only install it at own risk. But this might be fake-news.

I see... Assuming it's possible to fix such problem, this would also mean, that ANSYS either don't want or is not able to fix the translators, wouldn't it?


What about the workbench readers, would they be a possible replace? I never use the workbench, because i currently aren't using anything from the ANSYS chain but ICEM.

Using Workbench I have been able to directly import a Step file into ICEM CFD. I created a Geometry Component System and a ICEM CFD Component System. To the Geometry Component, I attached the step file. Then I dragged this geometry to the ICEM Component. Et voila. It worked.

I always use the stand alone packages. So never investigated this route.....
