Blocking strategy for multi-element airfoil

Hi everyone,

I am trying to create a structured mesh for double-element airfoil using ICEM CFD. Luckily, my first attempt was successful (PFA, the figures). The minimum angle and determinant were 36 deg and 0.9, respectively.

But, I wish to know if there is a better way to do the blocking. Please share if anyone in the forum has any info regarding or past experiences. Let me know if you want to see the blocking and geometry files.

may be this way? I was assuming your foil trailing edge is sharp

Hi Shereez,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the main element and the flap has a sharp trailing edge.
Below is how I created the blocks.
1)Created a C-grid imagining, there is no gap between the airfoils
2)Then did the necessary splits and adjusted the vertices

Could you please tell me how the blocking is done in your case? If it gives better quality, I will go with it.;)

Alright let me have a crack at explaining it. For this particular one, I used two blocks one for the top (main) and one for the bottom (flap)

The main block is split close to the flap (vertically).

The flap block and the main block initially goes all the way back to the outlet,
The blocks that goes to outlet (one from the flap and one from the main wing) are then collapsed using collapse blocks facility in ICEM.
Then the blocks inside the flaps and wings are selected in two separate steps (or you can choose both at once) to create an O grid outside. After that its just linking the edges and linear splits, control points , mesh spacings etc to improve quality.

Blocking is a piece of art, there is no wrong way of doing it (if you know what you are doing :p)
