[ICEM] ICEM structured mesh for vortex generator

Question ICEM structured mesh for vortex generator

Hi everyone,
I would greatly appreciate your help on the following challenge I've recently faced...
I am trying to create a structured domain around 2 rectangular vortex generators located on a flat plate ( installed over a tripwire on the plate). the problem is there are 4 small areas on the tips of the VGs near the interface between VGs and tripwire, that I have no idea how to make blocks around them...these areas are marked in yellow.
The pics are attached..... could any one please help me with this problem??? any idea on how to do the blocking in ICEM?

Hi Ali,

are these features essential? I assume you cannot modify the geometry to end flat with the bottom plate? Rounding over the the bottom plates edge at that corners, would that also be out of question?

Does your mesh really have to be structured only? In case it does not, you could insert a so called swept block which is a prismatically structured block with unstructured faces.
In this sharp angle it is difficult to put a strucutred block.

In the sticky post of this subforum, you'll find the guid "Simon's tips and tricks". In this guide, you can find some similar examples of meshing sharp angles (for a bearing-block-like geometry).


I would likely go with a swept block in that region, where the unstructured mesh conists of one triangle element in the corner and hexa elements in the rest. Maybe test hexa dominated as well. Only quads will likely result in bad elements in the sharp corner.

If the flow features in the respective region are not too relevant, I would try the following method sketched here:

I would introduce a small "foot" at the standing plates. This will allow to map a blocking without introducing a complex structure. I believe, this will only deform the mesh a little bit, and keeping an accapteble level of mesh quality. This is one of the options shown in Simon's guide - translated to this problem.

I am extremely thankful for your help Sebastian...
Since I'm new to ICEM, I'm not very familiar with meshing methods except the top-down blocking strategy.

Additionally, I need to optimize Y+ near the vortex generators, so I guess it is a must to have a clear and fine mesh near the boundary layers.


As you are familiar with ICEM, what is your suggestion for the meshing method, given the condition I mentioned????

And about the ' foot' you mentioned, is that little piece ( foot ) added to the geometry or is something related to mesh ( I mean virtual and does not exist there ) ???? If it is material, then doesn't it mess Y+ amount near vortex generators?

If you really need to do an structured mesh I will give it a try with a Y-block. You can google how to do it on Icem, but if you are having problems doing it let me know.
