How do I open a mesh made in Ansys Fluent 2020 R2 on Ansys Fluent 2019 R3?
 

How do I open a mesh that was made in Ansys Fluent 2020 R2 on an older version of Ansys Fluent? Specifically Ansys Fluent 2019 R3. I'm trying to open someone's Ansys Fluent file but it won't let me open it because I'm on an older version of Ansys.

Is there any way to just open the mesh in the older version of Ansys without having to upgrade?

If I recall correctly you cannot open a newer file in an older version of ANSYS. You can open an old file in a newer version of ANSYS.

That is my experience as well. I believe it is one of ANSYS's ways of getting you to pay annual maintenance and use the current version, by making collaboration difficult.

I don't know of a workaround for mesh files. But I have been able to get some material files to work by modifying the file with a text editor (notepad) and replacing the newer version numbers with the version number I'm using. May not work for meshes though, material files are much simpler.

I have seen ICEM to be more forgiven with respect to version issues. So you can try to import the .msh-file in ICEM and then export it as fluent again. However, succes not guaranteed.
