Solidworks --> Gambit
Any tips on importing geometries from solid works to Gambit. (without having to do much cleanup).
Most of my geometries are NOT extremely complex so I can draw them directly in Gambit. However I also have the solidworks files so I was wondering if I could save time by directly importing them in Gambit. I have tried that couple of times, but I have had to spend lot of time in clean up and utlimately ended up spending the same amount of time as in drawing from scratch. Any tips ? Any other CAD packages that work better than solid works ? Thanks in advance |
Re: Solidworks --> Gambit
Hi Sandeep,
I imported a fairly complex geometry from Solidworks to Gambit via acis and it worked great. It came in as 8 separate volumes, as in the original file. Tracie |
Re: Solidworks --> Gambit
As mentioned by Tracie, the most preferred option would be to write an ACIS file from Solidworks and import that in Gambit. You can also use Parasolid format as the next preferred option. Please make sure to check the geometry in Gambit after import, and use "healing" to improve its accuracy, if needed.

I operate a business, CAD Repair, that specializes in helping get neutral files into software cleanly. If your models are not to complex then I can probably do it very cost effective for you.

importing solidworks gometry into gambit
Quote:
i tried the same thing but an error occurs "file:///F:/K/Gambit/workk/wheel%20k.IGS" "ACIS error 52005:save file is from a later version of acis." and i am using solidworks 2010 for designing please suggest me a solution to the problem i would be really grateful |
did you try to import a IGS File or an ACIS FIle?
|
i have tried both ,
when i do import-->iges and the try to open the .igs format , and the error is --" import iges -F:\\gambit\\workk\\wheel k.igs scale 1 spatial tolerant. Translation requires license feature geom-trans translation failed " and when i try to import-->acis and then try to open .sat file , the error is "import acis -F:\\gambit\\workk\\wheel k.sat" ascii 'ACIS error 52005 :save file is from a later version of acis' |
u can convert it to *.igs :)
|
this is what i am trying to say ,,
when i save the solidwork geometry in .igs format and open it in gambit , error occurs |
and if you try to import step file?

This thread is dead but...
In case anyone is looking up this thread later on, I have found that imported ACIS/.sat files work well with Gambit, where parasolid/.x_t files work well in the ANSYS DesignModeler program. The two geometry/mesh programs use different graphics engines. And as a best practice, eliminating as many translations as possible will yield the best results. For example, importing a .sat file into ANSYS DesignModeler will result in a file that was first translated into a parasolid format and then translated again into a DesignModeler file.
I don't know if Gambit is supported anymore by Ansys and Fluent, but I suspect that it isn't. Ansys has its focus set on stitching Fluent into its workbench environment. They're making progress with each version, but there's still work to be done. The Ansys workbench mesher is still more of a mechanical (FEA) mesher than one suited for CFD grids in my opinion. But I digress... So, it may be harder and harder to deal with Gambit as the 3D CAD packages continue to develop. However, at the present time, you can export .sat files to earlier "ACIS-standard versions". I think ACIS version 10 works well with Gambit v4. If you need to export to parasolid, I would go back as far as your CAD program will allow with a file that looks right. |
solid to gambit
i tried to import 3D from Solidworks to Gambit with GIS format
but when it imported i didn't have volume When i wanted to convert all faces to volume, an error occured How can import my 3D Solid to Gambit? With other format (parasolid, step, acis ) error occured!! My Geometry so complex and i can not draw it in gambit |
*what kind of error occured with step ?
*with IGS I assume you need to clean the surfaces and connect them for generating volume. check here: https://www.sharcnet.ca/Software/Gam...guide/tg05.htm |
ERROR: Translation requires license feature gem-trans.
|
the message is clear: you don't have the required license for importing cad
|
license
I know that!
but How can i get the license? What am I gonna do to do my project? |
you still have the possibility to import IGS file.
