I have a geometry that can be meshed nearly completely with a structured 3d hex mesh, but there is a triangular bit which would need some prisms to remain structured, the ideal solution i have in mind is sketched in 2d in the attachment.

Can this be done? - is there a tutorial? - Where should I be looking?

You could do a swept block... Go to "Blocking => Edit Block => Convert Block Type" and make that block swept...

Here are some images...

First, the model with a collapsed "wedge" block.

Then the DEZ I used to convert to swept...

Then after I change that wedge into a swept block.

(note it is probably too coarse too look good, but you get the idea.)

If you are really picky about the pattern, you can import any surface mesh you like and associate the fact to that surface mesh to control the sweep.

Rather than associating the Face to an imported mesh, you could just change the mesh other ways.

For instance, simply refining it helps give the paving algorithm some flexibility.

You could also change the Free face mesh type. Here I switched from hexa dominant to all hexa.

And perhaps refine it again.

One more thought... Once you start talking about swept blocks like this, or even like your original suggestion, you are no longer dealing with Structured mesh. You will need to export this as an "unstructured" hexa mesh.

Only the collapsed wedge element (first image) is supported as a structured domain.

Another option would be to convert the collapsed block (doesn't work once a block is swept) into a Y-Block...

I am attaching the images to show the DEZ, the modified blocking (after 1 click) and the final pure structured hexa mesh.
