Hi all.

I am using ansys mesh. I am modeling a rectangular channel where the bottom consists by the contour of triangles equally spaced. I am using a sweep method. At the moment I have 115435 elements. I am trying to refine my mesh in order to see the improvements in results but I am receiving a message saying" The meshing run out of memory". I don´t understand this because I have already run some problems with almost 2000000 tetra elements. Could someone explain me this please?suggestions in order to solve this because I think i need a more refined mesh would also be nice.

Best regards

Maybe try symmetry? It seems weird though for such a number of cells.....
otherwise you could chop down the model and mesh seperately....

hi antonio
i had have the same problem and the massage have indicated me that the memory been too small.
it' s strange that you write, are you sure of the number of element?

Hi all.

unfortunately the numbers are correct (). Of course the geometry wasn`t the same as the present model but I have already did some simulations with almost 2000000 elements.

windows 32-bit can use only 3Gb of RAM, that allows approx. 3-3.5m elements.

What mesher are you using? Some that are very efficient for tetra methods take more memory for their swept algorithms (although you would think it should be simpler).

Also, 32 bit systems have a 2Gig memory limit (not 3Gig) on any single process.

Hi all. Thanks for all your comments.

I am using ANSYS Meshing Application. Is this an example where the swept algorithm takes a lot of memory?

Regards.

You are right, 2gb for a process.

Yup, they are working on it (improved for memory efficiency at 12.0, 12.1 and 13.0). You could try the MultiZone method (Uses ICEM CFD Hexa automatically in the background). Multizone is more efficient. What version are you using and I could give more specific details.

Hi all. Thanks a lot for your suggestions.

I have already managed to solve my problems. I have concluded that swept algorithms need much more memory than tetra methods (as Simon said). In order to resolve this I have basically split my domain in multibody parts instead of having only one volume for the entire domain. I have used the sweep method near the bottom and in the rest of my domain I have used automathic method. With this procedure I have been able to have a more refined mesh.

Regards

Hi rmadhavan4,

8GB ram 32bit system
such a system doesn't make sense. At first i would try to switch to a 64bit system.

regards Frank

diamondx will become famous soon enough
For people with good ram but still suffering from memory issue, try this trick:

Go to system panel -» System -» advanced system -» performances -» parameters -»Advanced -» Virtual Memory -» and give it a higher value...

What i did here is taking some of the HDD memory and use it as RAM to help out a little bit.

Let me know it this works...
