mesh generation from .vol file

hallo,
i am relatively new to CFD and meshing... By now I am going through the User's Guide and practicing all day I also installed the programs NetGen and Engrid. With both of them i tried to open a .vol file, which made them crash the .vol is a seal's vibrissae (beard hair), which has been scanned by a scientific machine/computer. It consists of many .tif files, which in sum create the .vol file after merging. I have no idea how to open or mesh it for some flow calculation Could someone please help me? Look for a way to convert that vol file into an STL or VRML file. Often the scanner software will be able to output in these formats (better than conversion). Once you have one of those more standard faceted formats, you will find that a lot of softwares support those formats (including ICEM CFD).
What sort of analysis is this anyway? Sounds interesting. |

Dear Simon,
thank you very much for your answer. I do only have the files, but no access to the scanner any more. The aim is to analyse the absence of vortexes behind this obstacle while having a fluid flow around this seal's vibrissae caused by it's unique geometry. I maybe found a solution to open those files - it is a program named VolView - published by KitWare - but at the moment i am stressed a lot with learning to pass my exams, so i did not try any more. Interesting study...
Hopefully Volview has an option to output as STL or DXF or something like that. At least with ICEM CFD, you only have to get it as a faceted geometry and don't need a full bspline conversion... Good luck with your exams. Simon |
