3D Curve to Spline to Extrude
I'd like to create a domain for an airfoil mesh. Thus my plan is to import the upper- and lowerside coordinates of the airfoil, create splines out of it, create a farfield circle, extrude it with the airfoil as "hole" and so get my domain.

However I'm stuck with the creation of the spline. I imported my airfoil coordinates as 2 3D curves, but how do I extrude them ? Do I have to transform those curves into regular sketch-splines ? But how ?

I've seen that there is a video tutorial online, but here in the computer lab of my university there is no codec and no flash player installed and of course I dont have any admin rights. argh !

did you find how to solve your problem ? Because i am in the same situation. I don't know how to extrude the curve of the airfoil.

Thank you.

Hi everyone,

This is the solution:

1) Import 3D-Curves as instructed in other threads with the help of a properly formatted Coordinates File. Make sure that the endpoints of your curves coincide.

2) Create a new plane. In that plane, you do a "Sketch Projection" of the two curves. You will have to pick them manually.

3) Extrude the sketch.

works great. thanks for the tip.

I was trying the sketch projection option in ansys design modeler. I have a 3d airfoil curve which I want to analyse in a 2D air domain. Under the sketch projection option what should I put as the target?

Target of "Sketch Projection"
Hi dreamz,

In the "Details View", your "Sketch Projection" wants to know which entity it should project into your new plane (row "Geometry" in Details View). Manually pick the 3D-Curve in the Graphics Window, then hit "Apply" and "Generate".

Did I get your question right? If you're asking where to project your curve onto: you need to first create the 3D-Curve and then create a new plane in which the Sketch Projection can take place. You cannot project anything onto the original XY/ZX/YZ-Plane, since they are upstream of your 3D-Curve.

Thanks. Your guidance worked..!! :)
Hearty thanks.!!

Projection feature

I followed your suggestion , but it is not working.
I am using Fluent 16.1

I created a 3D curve with data point (that works)
then i created a new plane , as you suggested.
But still the projection feature doesn't work . I want this 3D curve in my sketch.
Plz help
