Creating Separate Mesh for touching volumes

Edit: Fixing this because i was not being very helpful >.<

Hello,
I have attached a picture for reference. Channel 6 is a fluid, and the others 1,2,3,4,5 are solids. In it i have shrunk volume 6 to more easily represent the system, but volume 6 would infact take up the entire gap in there and thus be as tall as 1 and 5, and as wide as 3, so it is touching all of them, like in the lower picture.

So i have a system made up of 6 volumes. Volumes 2,3, and 4 share faces where they look connected. Same with volumes 1 and 2, and 4 and 5. Volume 3 has its own set of faces that are in the same place as the ones for volume 1, 3 and 5. I constructed these volumes from vertices and edges.

Basically what i want to do is have a finer mesh in volume 6, and a coarser mesh in the other volumes, or at least volumes 1,2,4,5. I have an interface region set up so that i could then run it in fluent. However i am having trouble getting gambit to not match the meshes. Does anyone have a few steps to get them disconnected, and thus have two mesh sizes (one for the fluid and one for the solids)?

Sorry for the previous confusing post, and thanks for the help.

didn't understand really what you wanted.
Can you post a sketch?
What do you want to compute?
Are volumes 1 & 2 isolated together, or are you expecting a flowfields from volume 1 to 2 (or 2 to 1)?

Yah sorry, that was a terrible explanation. I have redone it, thanks

why do you want to mesh the solid volumes?

damute February 8, 2012 02:14

I have some heat being generated from the bottom face which is being conducted by the solid to the channel that has fluid flowing along it conducting it away

then solid conduction
I am not experienced with solid conduction, but on the online help they are talking about shadow-walls look for

Then in your situation, you just need to disconnect your blue volume from other

Yah. i have tried to disconnect the volume from the others but i am not sure i am going about it the right way. i have tried disconnecting the faces and edges but i seem to run into trouble with meshing the area under the fluid when i do that. do you have a suggestion of a simple method or procedure for disconnecting the volume?

before meshing your volumes, copy blue volume with any translation vector.
Delete original blue volume.
Move the copy back with opposite translation vector.
New volume should be at its original place, but disconnected.
To be sure, move it once again anywhere: it is moving then it is not connected, else you may have an error from gambit

Excellent, thank you very much, ill give that a try.

Thanks, this worked perfectly for getting things disconnected.

I am just wondering however if there is a way to manage how the faces are numbered, or somewhere that shows how gambit numbers faces when you copy the volume. I am trying to apply some groupings to the inlet and outlet, but i have found that sometimes the numbering doesnt stay consistent and so my groups dont get applied.

Thanks,
