Export refined mesh to fluent
Dear all,
For my MSc thesis for my study Applied Physics I'm modeling a carotid artery. My predecessor created nice hexagonal mehses. Now it's my job to refine those meshes to achieve grid-independent results. I succeeded to refine the mesh in ICEM with the function "refine all mesh" in "adjust mesh density" in the "edit mesh" tab. However, when I try to export it to Ansys Fluent, I get the warning that there are uncovered faces and then ICEM becomes not-responding. It does write a ...msh file, but ICEM nor Gambit nor Fluent is able to read it. Does anybody know what the problem could be? Are there other file-types that ICEM could export and which can be read by Fluent or Gambit? Some more info: I only have a mesh, no geometry. The original mesh is created in GridPro. The mesh doesn't contain blocking Your help will be appreceated! Heleen |
Before outputing a mesh, always check for errors and possible problems. Some errors, like uncovered faces, could be detected and fixed at this stage. Did you go through it?

I tried that today, but it caused a lot of extra problems. When checking the mesh ICEM told me that about 80% of my volumes have uncovered faces. If I try to fix that, ICEM becomes non-respondive. So I tried to do the same with a smaller mesh. It worked for a mesh (just a simple cylinder) with 33,304 cells. ICEM fixed the unmeshed faces, but when checking again I got a lot of multiple nodes. I chose to create a subset, export it to Fluent and that works, although Fluent gives a notion that the number of nodes doesn't correspond to the listed number of nodes. Then I tried to refine that cylinder and it got about 400,000 cells. When I checked it and let ICEM fix the uncovered faces, it became not-responding again. It could be the multiple nodes error, so my first question is: 1: what should or can I do about those multiple nodes? I have about eight-thousand of them, so removing them manually is not an option. My second guess is that the mesh is to large for my computer. On the other hand, I managed to let ICEM read a mesh with 1,5 milion cells, so I can hardly imagine that the memory is the problem. So my second question is: 2: How can I check if it is a memory problem? Many thanks! Heleen |
create geometry in ICEM, otherwise it is almost impossible to do as you want.

Thanks for the encouragement to make my mesh in ICEM. First I didn't want to because I thought it'd take me a lot of extra time, but the failing attempts to refine the mesh take much time as well.

If original mesh was created in gridpro, why don't you just open gridpro and refine it?

Would be a great idea, but there is no license for Gridpro anymore. The only meshing programmes with license are Gambit and Gridpro.
From the Gridpro-user I have some topology-files (extensions .fra, .sch and .tria), some mesh-files (.msh) and some other files (.stl, .neu). Could I import a topology into ICEM? |
How many blocks are there in Gridpro file? If less than 250, you can try trail version.
