Honeycomb Panel FEA in ANSYS

I have modelled a Honeycomb panel in Creo 2.0. I want to perform modal analysis of the same. I chose to do that in Ansys because some limitations in Creo Simulate. But when I try to import the .iges file of the model in the Ansys APDL, it takes a lot of time (about 15-20 minutes).

I want to know what might be the problem? I think its size of the part file that's causing the problem, as the honeycomb model has a large number of small hexagonal cells.
Is there any way I can model the honeycomb panel in ANSYS itself, and then perform the Modal Analysis on it?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Prateek, as you asked the honeycomb panel can hardly be analyzed directly by the well-known software, such as ANSYS; because there is no corresponding element type to it in the software.

Here I am suggesting you 3 methods to resolve your problem,
  • We can create 3D FEA model of the real structure.
  • Create the stiffness matrices of the honeycomb panels through tests, and build a library of the element types, then the finite element calculation can be carried out.
  • Derive an orthotropic panel model from the initial 3D model of honeycomb panel
If you have any query, feel free to ask
Hope it can help you.

Thanks for replying, Richard.
Out of the 3 methods you've suggested, can you please tell me as to how exactly can I create a 3D FEA model of the honeycomb structure, or derive the orthotropic model from actual 3D model?

And also, which softwares do you suggest for this analysis?

ANSYS is the best for that.
