Hello there,

Recently I started appreciating Spaceclaim due to its scripting possibilities. However, after creating a script I was looking for, I faced really annoying problem which may seem trivial, altough I cannot solve it. Every time I try to create closed surface geometry e.g. sphere, Spaceclaim creates a solid body e.q. ball. This can be simply proven by rotating half of a circle by 360 degress about an axis. Rotating it by 180 degrees and mirroring it one obtains a surface geometry, however thickness cannot be assigned and Workbench cannot really interpret the geometry. Above issue does not exist in DesignModeler. Working in DesignModeler is not a solution since I'm after creating complex parameterized closed surface geometry using scripts.

I would really appreciate any tips on how to obtain a closed surface geometry.

You cannot create closed surfaces in spaceclaim, same thing applies for creating closed lines as it will automatically creates surface. You can try removing a small piece of surfaces so that it will not become fully enclosed.Like just add a small hole of very less dia and it might work.Btw ,design modeler is better to do scripting than spaceclaim but that is my opinion.

I greatly appreciate your reply kirakbabu.

Creating a small hole was one of my first thoughts and it didn't allow me to create mesh on the model, despite setting proper value of defeaturing tolerance. I have never tried scripting in DM. To be honest I didn't even know it is possible. However, I solved the problem by attaching two halves of a closed surface geometry to one component and selected "merged" in component "Share Topology" in SpaceClaim. Such approach ensures unity of mesh created in Mechanical.

It is quite ridiculous that SpaceClaim wont let users create closed surface geometries. I think Ansys should adapt SpaceClaim to be a more of a proper FEM modeler, without all these "silly" CAD features that can apparently cause serious inconveniences. I might consider going back to DM and learning scripting there.

Could you try these two options and see if any of it works
  1. Create a sphere and save the file as .stl. Make a new design and read the stl file. You should get the surface you need.
  2. Create a sphere. Go to the Facets tab and click Shrinkwrap. This should convert 3D model in to a coarse meshed surface.
You can adjust smoothness of surface by using smooth option in adjust sub-tab.

Good day everyone,

sultzan given your commend
("above issue does not exist in DesignModeler. Working in DesignModeler is not a solution since I'm after creating complex parameterized closed surface geometry using scripts")
Didi you find any API for the design modeler or the spaceclaim API??
