"Conversion of selected entities failed" error

I am trying to work with an .stl in DesignModeler but every operation I try results in the error "Conversion of selected entities failed" error. I have tried importing the stl directly into DesignModeler and also importing it into SpaceClaim, saving, and then switching to DesignModeler. Any help or ideas would be appreciated on how to fix the error.
Thanks!

Hi Hannah,

A picture / further details could help a lot to get better insights into the specific stl problem.

I can already say that SpaceClaim has a lot of features to handle and repair stl files and convert them to solids (way more advanced / versatile than Design Modeller). You can start with running a quick check in Spaceclaim to identify problematic facets / nodes / gaps etc... and automatically repair them / convert to CAD file.

Then if you really need to go thought DM for your workflow you can then directly import the SC file into DM.

Have fun ;)

Hi,
Thank you so much for your help! For some background my overall goal it to to apply a two-way FSI to a blood vessel model. I am following the tutorial found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGPmyGFnzhA.

What I am trying to do is create a surface body from the stl (blood vessel or just think of a tube). One method I have seen, is to use DesignModeler and create a Thin element to create a surface elemnt of the outer wall. However when I click Thin/Surface I get that error saying "Conversion of selected entities failed".

In Spaceclaim when I go to Check Facets and Autofix it caps the geometry so that it is watertight. However I believe I need the ends open (according to that tutorial that I am following). So far I have not found any functions in spaceclaim that would allow me to create the surface body of just the outerwall (leaving the ends open).

I have also noticed that when I use SpaceClaim and then switch to DesignModeler or go straight to Mechanical I loose the edges on my geometery which I need to add fixed supports.

I will attach a screenshot of the error I am seeing in designmodeler. Let me know if the attachment didn't work.

Thanks so much!

Hi Hannah!

I am currently facing the same problem with editing the STL in DM or SC. Were you able to solve it?
Thanks for sharing!

Hi,
I was able to fix it using the skin surface tool. Here is a video on how to do it:
